How to differentiate between small and large bowel on x-ray film:
1-By location: Large bowel is located at the periphery while the small bowel is located at the center of the film.
2-Folds: Large bowel have incomplete folds (haustration) while small bowel have complete folds (valvulae conniventes).
3- Content: Mottled appearance (fecal sign) due to air and fecal matter while small bowel no fecal sign and contains clear air and fluid.
4-Normal diameter of small bowel < 3 cm.
Normal diameter of large bowel < 6 cm.
Normal diameter of cecum < 9 cm.
